July, August, and September STUDEBAKER FEATURED CAR OF THE 1st Quarter
This
fine example of Studebaker's 1956 Golden Hawk is owned by Fran and
Kathy Tremain. They purchased the car from Rick Carabajal in
Brookfield WI on July 16th of 2021.
We actually has to
pull the car with one flat tire skidding (brake drum locked up) from
Rick's garage and load it on a trailer. Since then Fran has been
busy fixing the car (putting loads of money in it) and he has
completed most of the frame on restoration.
Their
were 4,071 Golden Hawks manufactured and this car is one of 3,470 of
them made in South Bend. The balance were assembled in Los Angeles. This car was made near the end of 1956 model years production, on
April 19th, 1956. The body number was 3295 and the engine
serial number was S-3296. This would be the only Studebaker Hawk to
be fitted with Packard's 352 Cubic Inch Sky Power V8 making 275 horse
power and Packard's Ultramatic transmission. The Golden Hawks had a
base price of $3,295.00 (no heater, defroster, signal lights, cigar
lighter, radio, or back-up lights.) Add those and two-tone paint,
white wall tires, full disk hub caps, electric clock, glove box
light, tinted glass, and you get $3,758.00. Add Distribution and
Delivery charges another $187.00 plus local sales tax and the total
cost out the door becomes nearly $4,000. A huge price for a five
passenger car. No wonder so few Hawks were sold.
July, August, and September BLACK SHEEP FEATURED CAR OF THE 1st Quarter
This
1961 Corvette belongs to Bob and Janice Givens. They purchased the
car in June of 2020. It did not live up to Bob's expectations and he
has been doing a mini restoration of the car over the last two years.
The most recent of which is a new top.
1961
Corvettes were produced from September 1960 through July 1961 with a
total production of 10,939. All 1961 Corvettes were convertibles with
over half receiving an auxiliary hardtop. 2011 was the 50th
Anniversary of the 1961 Corvette.
Of the 10,939 1961 Chevrolet
Corvette manufactured that model year, only 1,794 were “Roman Red”
and only 954 were two-tone red/white. A lot less were equipped with: four speed manual transmission
($188.50), duel 4 barrel carburetors ($150.65), posi-traction ($43.05). Other options on this car are: Two-tone paint ($16.15), Heater ($102.25), AM Radio ($137.75)
Add these options to the base price of
$3,934 and you get a staggering $4,590.15, a load of money in 1961.
This would be the last year for wide
whitewall tires, two-tone paint, and duel carburetors. New for this year were aluminum
radiators and aluminum four-speed transmissions. Modifications for this car are 350
cubic inch V-8 engine and racing wheels.

Exterior styling was face lifted for 1961. It was the first
Corvette without heavy "teeth" in the grill area. The
rear was completely restyled with four taillights, now a Corvette
tradition. |

RPO-687 included special front and rear shocks, air
scoops/deflectors for front brakes and air scoops for rear brakes,
metallic brake facings, finned brake drums with cooling fans, and
quick-steering adaptor of which only 233 were produced! |

This was the last year for use of 283ci engines in Corvettes. This was the last model with "wide" whitewall tires. |

1961 Colors were: Tuxedo Black - 1,340 produced; Ermine White -
3,178 produced; Roman Red - 1,794 produced; Sateen Silver - 747
produced; Jewel Blue - 855 produced; Fawn Beige - 1,363 produced;
Honduras Maroon - 1,645 produced. |
