Studebaker Models in Chronological Order 1913 to 1929

1913:

Model SA 25 Four - Model AA 35 Four - Model E Six - Started late 1912.

1914:

Model SC Four - Model EB Six - Model AA was dropped. No start or end date was found.

1915:

Model SD Four - Model EC Six - No start date is found, but these models most likely ended when the new models were released in June of 1915 for the 1916 year.

1916:

Model SF Four - Model ED Six - Started June of 1915 - After about 25,000 cars were manufactured, changes were made. The initial cars are considered Series 16, after the changes were made the cars were considered Series 17.  Still later more changes are made and these are considered Series 18 (see 1917).

1917:

Model SF Four - Model ED Six - These models were continuation of the 1916 models with some changes and were designated Series 18.  The exact time the series changed to 18 is not known. Production of these models most likely ended in October.

1918:

Light Four Model SH - Light Six Model EH - Big Six Model EG - These models were released in November of 1917. Shortly after production began the Light Six Model EH is renamed to Special Six Model EH.

1919:

Light Four Model SH - Special Six Model EH - Big Six Model EG - This is a continuation of the 1918 models. Production of the Light Four SH model likely ended in May of 1920 when the new Light Six EJ Model is released.

1920:

Light Six Model EJ - Special Six Model EH - Big Six Model EG - The Light Four series has ended and is replaced with a new car called the Light Six in April of 1920. The other two models carry over from 1919.

1921:

Light Six Model EJ - Special Six Model EH - Big Six Model EG - All three models are carried over from 1920.

1922:

Light Six Model EJ - Special Six Model EL - Big Six Model EK - Models for the Special and Big Six changed, but the exact introduction date is unknown.

1923:

Light Six Model EM - Special Six Model EL - Big Six Model EK - The Light Six Model changed from EJ to EM and the Special Six and Big Six Models were carried over from 1922.  The exact start date for the Light Six Model EM is unknown.

1924:

Light Six Model EM - Special Six Model EL - Big Six Model EK - All these models ended production near mid-year of 1924 as the new models for 1925 are introduced in September of this year.  This is the final year of production for the Light Six Series. A new model the Standard Six is being released.

1925:

Standard Six Model ER - Special Six Model EQ - Big Six Model EP - All of these models were released at the same time, September of 1924.  The Standard Six Series is new.

1926:

Standard Six Model ER - Special Six Model EQ - Big Six Model EP - Big Six Model ES - The Big Six Model ES is released in July of this year and starts the use of the President name.  The Big Six ES is built on two wheel bases, cars being built on the longer of the two are generally referred to as Presidents, where those built on the shorter of the two are regarded as just Big Six models.  It is likely, but uncertain if this ended the production of the Big Six Model EP.  The Standard Six Model ER will end production at mid-year 1926 as the Standard Six Model EU for 1927 is released.  This new model EU is destined to be renamed Dictator.  The Special Six Series will end in December of 1926 as the Big Six EW Model replaces this slot in the line-up, destined then to be renamed the Commander.

1927:

Standard Six Model EU - Big Six Model EW - Big Six Model ES - Things get a little confusing this year.  First the Standards Six Model EU starts production in July of 1926.  Then in mid-summer of 1927 is renamed to Dictator Model EU.  Secondly, in January of 1927 the Big Six Model EW is released and renamed the Commander Model EW in April of 1927.  The Big Six Model ES continue in production for 1927 with the short wheel base models being called Big Sixes and the longer wheel base models being called Presidents.  The real President, will not come into existence until the straight eight is introduced.

1928:

Dictator Model GE - Commander Model GB - Commander GH - President Model - FA - President Model FB - The Dictator Model GE starts in late 1927 and is designated “First Design”.  They look like the 27 EU’s.  The “Second Design” were fazed in by body style over a period of time until the “Third Design” is released in mid-year.  The “Third Design” Model GE’s are generally referred to as 1929 models.  The Commander Model GB ended as the Commander Model GH started in mid-year, the model GH ended production at the end of 1928. The President Model FA Eight, started January of 1928, while the Model FB was introduced mid-year. However, the Model FA was also updated with a different body and engine at mid-year.  This significant change without changing the model designation has created many a problem for the restorer.

1929:

Dictator Model GE - Commander Model GJ Six - Commander Model FD Eight - President Model FE Eight - President Model FH Eight  - The Dictator is a continuation of the 1928 GE model, the “Third Design”.  The Commander Model GJ Six started in January of 1929.  The new Commander Model FD was also introduced in January of 1929.  The President Model FE 135 inch wheelbase and the President Model FH 125 inch wheelbase started in January of 1929 and ended June of 1930.

This next portion of this web page contains detailed information about the cars Studebaker manufactured from 1913 to 1929.
The qualifiers are listed in the first section, followed by the foot note information, section two, show both above and below the section three charted information.

The detail charts, Section III, have the following format:

1. Each section starts with the Serial Numbers for that Model in the first row and 11th column, and apply to all the body styles for that Model.
2. The production numbers listed in this first row and 10th column, and apply to all the body styles for that Model.  (Read the Qualifiers section for additional information). These sections are listed in bold blue text with yellow background
3. The next lines list all the rest of the body styles with foot notes as they may apply.
4. At the end of each year, two lines report the total production numbers for that year.  There are two sources as noted. These sections are listed in bold yellow text.

Section I:   Qualifiers and Disclaimers for the Detail Charts

Production:

Production number are calculated on the basis of the start and end serial numbers unless otherwise foot noted.  Without access to the actual production records it is impossible to confirm that every serial number was actually produced, thus the production number should be taken as representative rather then actual unless otherwise confirmed.  The model designation start and end Serial Numbers and the resultant calculated production often do not coincide with the start and end of any model year.  Thus the “Annual Production” number and the “Models Production” (when added up), will most likely not match.

Body Styles:
Different sources often refer to the same body style by different names, making it impossible to confirm that that we have captured all the body styles in any given year and model designation, or for that matter that something that seems to be missing, is really there under a different name, for example Sedan rather the Victoria or Phaeton rather then Touring.  We are ready and willing to make corrections based on your suggestions and additional research.  Just use the “Contact Us” form from the “Home Page” to submit your suggestions.

Errors:

In compiling and typing this much information, there is always the possibility of a typing and conversion error (not typing what you have read).  Please help us out when ever possible by offering corrections to any of the data presented here.  Use the form listed above and please state as clearly as possible the error you found and the source which you use to confirm the error.  Your help is greatly appreciated in getting this data as close to perfect as can be managed.

Conflicts:

With the number of sources I used and the amount of data being presented, along with the difference in the date of the information being compiled, some conflicts did arise.  When ever this happened, I chose to use the data provided by the “Stude Guys” first.  Of coarse, even they sometimes have conflicts and when this happened, I used the most recently dated information.

Production of the GE Dictator ended in October of 1928 and the FC and GL Dictators were not introduced until mid-1929.  In Fred Fox's article (Turning Wheels November 2007), he speculated that either production of GE Dictator had far exceeded sales, or that the FC and GL Dictator program was just that far behind.  In any event, there was a six month gap in Dictator production from late 1928 to mid-1929.  The Dictator cars listed below were found in the Classic Car Database, they are most likely the result of sales and registrations of 28 Dictators which were actually sold and registered in 1929.  Where the prices came from is had to tell.

Studebaker The Complete Story - Cannon & Fox
*10
Antique Studebaker Review Sept/Oct 2010 by Richard Quinn

1913

This year marked the final emergence of the Studebaker brand as a major nameplate.  The Garford, E-M-F, and Electric motor car era was complete. Studebaker had complete control of the EMF assembly plants in Detroit and Walkerville and was manufacturing many parts for it’s 1913 models in South Bend.  For 1913 Studebaker would offer two four cylinder cars, the SA Model, at 25 HP and the AA Model a 30 HP.  They also offered their first six cylinder, the E Model at 40 HP.  The dominant body style was the four-passenger touring car, but roadsters, coupes and sedans were also offered.  Some think the SA was just a reworked Flanders 20, and the AA and E were reworked E-M-F 30‘s.  However, Bonsall disputes that and indicates that all three models were completely re-engineered versions of the Model 30, done by James G. Heaslet and the newly hired Fred M. Zeder.  Heaslet, Studebaker’s chief engineer, was formerly of Garford and E-M-F. He had established the first Studebaker engineering department in 1911. Total production was 35,410 units.

1914

The motor car line was carried over from 1913, except the larger Model AA was dropped and the SA Models became the new SC Models, now rated at 30 HP. The Model E, became the Model EB.  The steering wheel moved to the left, and the gas tank was relocated in the cowl.  Total production was 35,460 units.

1915

Styling changed, as the cars were considerably less boxy, with a fender line more flowing.  Models designations moved to SD for the fours and EC for the sixes. Prices were reduced and sales were up. Total Production was 48,485 units.

1916

Sales increase even more in 1916, with the only significant change to the motor car line was moving the gas tank from the cowl to the rear of the car.  The four Models designation moved to SF and the six Models moved to ED.  A new assembly plant was opened in Chicago and car assembly operations also began in South Bend.  Even so, it was becoming apparent that another new assembly facility would be needed in order to keep up with demand.  It was determined that this new plant would be located in South Bend, and ground was broken December 12, 1916 for a new machine shop, forge shop, and power plant.  This set in motion a trend that within a few years would see all automobile production shift from Detroit to South Bend.  Total Production was 65,885 units.

1917

Studebaker expected to build 75,000 cars, but that was not to be the case as the US entered into World War I, and civilian passenger car production was sacrificed to satisfy the demand for war goods.  The four and six Model designations remained the same in 1916 and little if any changes were made to the existing motor car line.  Sales fell significantly with contributing factors being increases in material, wages, and selling expenses, forcing increases in retail price for the four cylinder models.  These price increases pushed Studebaker out of the volume part of the four-cylinder market.  However, sales of six-cylinder models remained strong, passing the 1916 volume.  The Chicago assembly plant was leased to the government and ceased to be a Studebaker facility entirely.  However, as bleak as things were, it was time to look to when peace time automobile production would return.  The cars Studebaker has been selling since 1913 were a vastly improved version of the old E-M-F 30, but by 1917 this design was getting very long in the tooth.  Studebaker’s chief engineer, Fred Zeder and a team which included Owen R. Skelton and Carl Breer, set out to completely redesign an entirely new line of Studebaker cars, which would be release for production in 1918.  Total production was 42,357 units.

1918

Studebaker continued the old SF Model four, re-designated as the Model SH Light Four, for the first few months of 1918.  They also released two new Model car, the EH Model Light Six, and the EG Model Big Six.  These last two being the first new cars designed from the ground up by Studebaker.  The EH and EG Models were released in November of 1917 for 1918 model year, thus giving Studebaker three prices ranges for the first time. The new Model cars had a three speed manual transmissions, replacing the old troublesome transaxle and a Hotchkiss drive in the rear.  Styling represented a departure from the boxy styles found since 1913, with more curvaceous and contemporary lines.  Windshields were set at an angle instead of being perpendicular.  A variety of body styles were available, including touring, roadster, coupe, and sedan.  However, car production continued to dwindle, do to war time demands, to the lowest number since the company went public in 1911.  Total production was 23,864 units.

1919

As the nation returned to peace time, sales increased.  The Model SH Light Four and Model EG Big Six returned for another year.  Studebaker began to liquidate it’s horse-drawn vehicle business this year, through regular trade channels, at full wholesale prices.  This liquidation would be completed in 1920 and the Studebaker name would never again appear on this type of vehicle.  To replace the horse-drawn vehicle business, automobile production was slowly being centralized in Indiana.  This year, Studebaker would spend $8.2 million on new plants and facilities, 90 percent being spent in South Bend.  A new automobile plant was under construction, at a cost of $15 million.  This plant, designated Plant 2, would be dedicated to production of the new Light Six, scheduled for production in the spring of 1920.  Guy P. Henry is appointed chief engineer, a position he would hold for the next six years, replacing Fred Zeder.  Total production was 38,550 units.

1920

Sales of Studebaker cars soared on the strength of a postwar economic boom.  The new Model EJ Light Six, 112 inch wheel base and 207 cubic inch engine with aluminum head, rated at 40 HP is released.  The old Light Six is refined and release as the new Model EH Special Six, with tear-shaped cowl lights.  The Model EG Big Six gets a new single dry-plate clutch.  The Big Six is much improved in appearance with a new cowl vent, windshield wipers, a nickel-plated radiator shell, nickel-plated bumpers, spotlights, a motometer and optional disc wheels.  All the cars had new styling, which was less rounded and crisper. Total production was 51,474 units.

1921

Sales performance is especially impressive in a year in which the nation underwent a short, sharp recession.  While other car manufactures saw sales collapse, Studebaker experienced it’s all-time record year to date with production of 66,643 units.  The Light Six, Special Six, and Big Six Models designators remained the same with just a few refinements.

1922

Automobile production was being shifted from Detroit to South Bend, with nearly all the capital spending designated for South Bend.  In this year alone, six major plant buildings had been erected.  Studebaker passed the century mark, with 110,269 cars sold. The Special Six designation moved from EH to EL and the Big Six designation moved from EG to EK.

1923

Studebaker reached it’s high watermark in this year, with record sales of $166.1 million, as 145,167 cars were sold.  Allowing for inflation, these figures would never again be equaled in the company’s history.  The sales represented nearly 4% of industry sales for this year.  Car manufacturing capacity had been increased to 180,000 units per year and the company was now manufacturing it’s own bodies, castings and other key components.  In this year, only the Light Six designation changed from EJ to EM.

1924

Construction of a new iron foundry in South Bend is finished, completing the postwar capital expansion plan for the present.  This year sales fell of and profit were sharply down as production dropped to 110,240.  This was most likely do to the aging of the current product line. A new range of cars were to be offered on September 14, 1924 containing fifteen models mounted on three chassis for the 1925 model year.  None of the Model designator’s were changed for this model year.

1925

The Studebaker Light Six is renamed the Studebaker Standard Six in August of 1924, the designation for this model would be ER.  The new car received a bored-out 216.6 cubic inch engine rated 50 HP.  This is the year four-wheel hydraulic brakes would be introduced to Studebaker Big Six cars as a $75 dollar option.  According to Bonsall (The Studebaker Story), these brakes were instantly controversial for an astonishing reason, many thought it was downright unsafe to stop a car that quickly.  The Special Six designator changed to EQ, available in Sedan, Coach, Duplex Phaeton, Duplex Roadster, Victoria, Berline, Brougham and Sport Roadster models.  The Big Six designator changed to EP, while it’s engine got higher compression and full-pressure lubrication along with a few new models as well.  Sales and profits increased, as Studebaker cut prices across all the ranges.  A total of 134,644 cars were sold during the calendar year, not quite as good as 1923, but much better then the 1924 year numbers.

1926

This is the year that the old E-M-F plant in Detroit is finally closed.  Again Sales and Profits are down with only 111,315 cars sold.  Concurrent with consolidation in South Bend, a modern engineering and research plant was built and Studebaker’s proving ground came into being.  This 840 acre site with a selection of driving conditions and gradients permitted the full testing of new Studebaker models.  It was constructed just outside South Bend and was the first such facility in the industry.  Plant capacity had reached 200,000 cars if demand were to warrant that.  Model designators for all three product lines remained the same.  This is also the year the ground work would be laid for the introduction of a all new car to be called the “Erskine”, to be release in 1927.

1927

Studebaker celebrated its Diamond Jubilee on January 2, 1927.  Studebaker introduces a new small car called the “Erskine Six”, in Paris, that would ultimately become something of a disappointment on both sides of the Atlantic.  The greatest problem, other then a weak engine, manufactured by Continental, rather then Studebaker itself, was the cars price.  A sedan listed for $975, nearly twice the about needed to purchase a Ford Model T and nearly as much as Buick at only $1,195.  This new car would have a very short life. 23,137 Erskine cars were sold this year.  Things looked better with the carry over models.  The Standard Six is replaced with Standard Six Dictator Model EU, the Big Six is replaced with the Big Six Commander and Big Six President Models EW and ES respectively.  Revenues were down slightly and profits were off as well on sales of slightly more cars sales of 116,740.

Side Bar: Many sources differ in the exact transition of the product line from Standard Six, Special Six, and Big Six; to Dictator, Commander, and President however, most seem to agree the transition started in 1927 and was totally complete by end of 1928, with an intermediate step where the two names, the old and the new were combined for example.  Big Six Commander or Big Six President.

1928

Studebaker acquires controlling interest of Pierce-Arrow, Buffalo, NY.  Erskine crowed “Studebaker now blankets the motor car field, from the Erskine, the Studebaker, to the Peirce-Arrow, the firm now has something for everyone”.  The initial purchase of 230,125 shares of Class B stock for $2 million dollars, gave Studebaker control of 57% of the outstanding Pierce-Arrow’s stock.  Studebaker was to complete the acquisition over the next two years.  It was reported that the deal also included a cash infusion of $2 million dollars to completely revise the Pierce-Arrow line for 1929.  The Erskine car line designation changed to 51, which included Sedan, Club Sedan, and Roadster.  The Standard Six Model from 1927 becomes the Dictator, Model GE, it’s engine remained the same, but HP increased to 67.  The Commander Model GB and midyear Model GH used the same engine, the HP was up to 85, and included Sedan, Club Sedan, Cabriolet, Victoria, Coupe, and Roadster.  The President came in two Models, FA and FB, both were 8’s.  The early FA engines were 313.1 cu. in. at 100 HP, the later FA and FB used a 336. 7 cu. in. engine making 109 HP.  The FA road on a 131 inch WB, while the FB rode on a 121 inch WB.  The line up included 5 and 7 passenger Sedans, Berline, Limo, Victoria, Roadster, and Touring.  Production for this year is 139,205 for all models.

1929

A new line of Pierce-Arrow cars were released and nearly 10,00 were built.  Studebaker purchases additional stock in PA which leads to a 91.7% stake in the company.  Studebaker price spectrum now spans from $895 to $10,000.  The Commander models are GJ six (248.3 cu. in. at 75 HP) and FD eight (250.4 at 80 HP).  The wheel base is 119 and 119.5 inch, respectively.  The line up included Sedan, Coupe, Cabriolet, Victoria, Roadster, and Touring.  The President Models changed to FE and FH and wheel base changed to 135 inch and 125 inch, respectively.  The engine remained the same, but HP went up to 115.  A new drop frame permitted lower and far more stylish bodies for the President line.  The line up included 5 and 7 passenger Sedans, Brougham, Limo, Victoria, Roadster, Cabriolet, and Touring.  The new Erskine Model designation is 52 and the WB is increased to 109 inches.  New Erskine styles are Club Sedan and two and four passenger Cabriolet.  Production for this year is 82,839 for all models.
